Our human nature clamors for recognition of contribution. Our motivation in the Gospel ministry cannot be which conference I will be asked to speak at, or what monetary gift I will receive, or how ministry partners will perceive what I’m doing (or not). I can have a large ministry. I can have a large influence. However, only eternity will tell just who was in it for the right reasons. Our motives are so important. We labor for Christ and Christ alone. The myopia of immediate results will become quite clear-eyed when we stand before our King of kings and Lord of lords. We’ll all be seeing a little better then since we’ll be seeing our life and labor through the finality of a glorious eternity. Since we’re already seated together with Christ in the heavenlies (one of my favorite biblical portions), why don’t we practice being clear-eyed about eternity now? Even with the predisposition to allow our hubris and base pride to muddy things up. Our service is for an audience of one. The only One that matters.
