The lie that we are not good enough is one of the most effective that Satan can disseminate. Every lie is based on a truth. Not the whole. And certainly nothing but the truth. But a truth nonetheless. I really am not good enough. Examine the lives of the disciples and you’ll see that these men were riddled with contradictions, complications, and personal failures. But here’s the good news both for them and us–it’s all we’ve got and Christ is willing to work with us. Not only is He willing, but ready and urgently desirous of using us despite our weakness. Paul wrote something like “…we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” When we realize that quite truly I am not good enough but I have complete satisfaction and sufficiency in Christ and His Word, then and only then do we come to the place where we realize that I was never good enough to begin with. It’s only by His glorious riches and grace that I am what I am. The gospel of self-sufficiency or self-help is alive and well. Don’t be fooled by its allure–I may not be all I should be but by God’s grace, He can be all I need.
