Waiting on the spark of inspiration every time you go to accomplish something is a surefire way to end up with little to no progress in the overall scheme of life. You will not feel inspired every moment of every day to do what needs to be done.
You may perhaps feel a tinge of inspiration at the outset–that’s probably all the more that you’re going to feel. Inspiration is important, but it’s only a small element in the insurmountable future of realizing the goal.
The key then is to take that spark and run with it. If you set out to build, write, create, or help, then do it. You likely won’t revive that spark all too often. You felt the need to voice your heart. Write. You saw the necessity to influence someone in a way beyond their own capacity. Help. You saw the need for a work of art to inspire or even challenge others. Create. The drudgery of the real work seems to diminish its importance in our own eyes. If it was important enough to move you to action, then it’s important enough to see it through.
These moments of inspiration capture your singular voice, perspective, wonder, need, and urgency. While you may labor in your field for years or decades attempting to produce something meaningful, don’t lose sight of why you started. Call it your inspiration. Call it your passion. Call it your calling. Just make sure you persist. Inspiration without persistence is simply a waste of what could have been and a missed moment to make your voice heard. The spark is important. However, risking to carry and nurture that into an honorable and tangible work is what delineates between mere dreamers and doers.
